First record of Marteilia sp in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis in Croatia ArchiMer
Zrncic, Snjevana; Le Roux, Frédérique; Oraic, Drazen; Sostaric, Branko; Berthe, Franck.
Marteiliosis is a disease of molluscs caused by Marteilia refringens in Europe and M. sydneyi in Australia. During routine examination of cultured mussels Mytilus galloprovinciallis in the northern Adriatic, the occurrence of Marteilia sp. was recorded with a prevalence of 5 %. This parasite was not detected in flat oysters reared in the same area. The affiliation of the detected parasite in M. galloprovinciallis was confirmed by in situ hybridization using a M. refringens probe, specific at the genus level. DNA of these infected mussels originating from the same area will be used to clarify the taxonomic position of this species within the genus Marteilia using a molecular approach.

Comps, Michel; Grizel, Henri; Papayanni, Youla.
During the last year (1981), zoosanitaries control was practiced on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis from Venise lagoon. This species is infected by new parasite Marteilia maurini sp. n. His structurals characteristic and his development cycle are similar to those of Marteilia refringens in the fIat oyster.

ArchiMer
Comps, Michel; Pichot, Yves; Papagianni, Panagiota.
Histological control practiced in 1981 revealed that the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is infected by a new parasite Marteilia maurini sp. n. The structure and the cycle of development are described. The particularities of this parasite in the genus Marteilia are given and discussed.

Report about mollusc diseaes ArchiMer
Berthe, Franck.
Of the 75 laboratories contacted through the survey, 54 answered, 14 of which are partially or totally devoted to mollusc diseases. In fact, only 4 laboratories are devoted full-time to this work. Of the 14 laboratories that declared to work on the diagnosis of mollusc diseases, 12 stated that they worked with mussels, 12 with oysters, 9 with clams and 8 with other mollusc species. This is coherent with available production information. According to production data in 2001 (FAO source), the main mollusc species in the region are the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis (297,485 tonnes), the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis (131,014 tonnes), the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas (127,323 tonnes, an important part of which is produced on the...

Berthe, Franck.
Infectious diseases are currently recognised as a major limiting factor to development and sustainability of aquaculture of molluscs. The study is focused on the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis and its paramyxean parasite Marteilia refringens. Results are contributing to the prevention of risk associated to infected stocks imports from endemic zones, by developing molecular diagnostic tools that are specific, sensible and reliable. Phylogeny and taxonomy of Marteilia refringens, previously impeded by microscopy limits, were clarified by sequencing the rDNA SSU, small sub-unit in the rRNA gene cluster. These new insights have practical implications discussed in a pragmatic polyphasic approach involving pathology and epidemiology. This approach led us to...
